Isola Garden Design
At Your Leisure Volume 3
By Charlotte Ellis.
There is an inherent poetry to the British garden: a quiet dialogue between the architectural legacy of a home and the living, breathing landscape that surrounds it. To capture this essence requires more than a green thumb; it demands the eye of an artist and the precision of a craftsman.
This month, we sit down with James Brash, the visionary Founder of the award-winning Isola Garden Designs. Partnering with Mackenzie Miller Homes, James brings a deeply personable, bespoke approach to landscape architecture, seamlessly aligning with a shared philosophy: that a luxury home does not end at the back door, but rather extends into the natural world.

Grounded in the Graft
Long before James was shortlisting for prestigious industry accolades, his relationship with the earth was deeply personal. With an eclectic artistic background rooted in music, drama, and operatic training, the transition to horticulture might seem unexpected, yet both require a mastery of composition, rhythm, and scale.
“Both sets of my grandparents were avid gardeners,” James reminisces. “On one side, it was vast herbaceous perennials; on the other, allotments teeming with vegetables. A seed was sown early on.”
The true “lightbulb moment” occurred twenty years ago at Moreton Morrell Horticultural College, under the mentorship of inspiring designers like Mike Roberts. But James is quick to emphasise that true luxury design isn’t born in a classroom; it is forged in the soil.
“To be a brilliant designer, you have to get your hands dirty,” he says. “My very first paid contract after studying was mowing a lawn with a mower borrowed from my parents’ shed. The best luxury businesses evolve over time through hard work. It took us ten years of building from the ground up to secure the calibre of high-end projects we deliver today.”
The Anatomy of an Award-Winning Space
Fast forward two decades, and Isola Garden Design is at the pinnacle of the British landscaping industry. Having previously won a prestigious BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) Award for a domestic garden in Leamington Spa, James and his team are currently preparing their latest masterpiece for the 2026 awards circuit: a breathtaking private estate in Knowle, Solihull.
Contending in the highly competitive £250-750k category, the Knowle project exemplifies the peak of contemporary outdoor luxury. “The client gave us complete creative freedom,” James explains. “The brief was multi-sensory. We have integrated organic planting borders, with dramatic raw limestone boulders, and a sunken pétanque court that can seamlessly transform into a hidden dance floor, or room to accommodate a magnificent long trestle dining table for al fresco entertaining with friends and family.”
Now in its second year, James and his team have returned to perfect and refine the space after a full year of settling, “A BALI award is the ultimate rubber stamp of approval from your peers,” he notes. “At the top end of this industry, it’s a tight-knit, highly supportive network of people who just want to see exceptional work being done.”

Cotswolds Inspiration & Personal Passions
Deeply rooted in the Cotswolds, James confesses a personal affinity for the traditional. He draws endless inspiration from iconic regional masterpieces like Hidcote, revering its famous room-to-room movement, and also, the privately owned Kiftsgate.
“I love traditional structure; topiary, Yew, pleached Hornbeam, and antique, aged stone” he says. “English limestone from Dorset and Belgian street clay pavers laid in a traditional herringbone pattern are timeless.”
In his own private garden, James blends this rigid formality with a softer, naturalistic romanticism. A formal avenue of Belgian clay pavers flanked by sculpted Yew balls leads to a vibrant, multi-layered sanctuary.
“I love a hot pop of colour,” James smiles. “My absolute go-to is the bright orange Geum, floating above a feminine palette of purple Salvias, deep pink Rosa ‘Ballerina’, and towering Allium ‘Globemaster’. It looks incredibly cool, and we are seeing clients request that artistic contrast much more now.”
Elevating the Development Landscape
Isola’s evolution has run beautifully parallel to Mackenzie Miller Homes. In a market where developers often treat landscaping as an afterthought, this partnership represents a profound shift in mindset.
“Where Mackenzie Miller Homes gets it right is understanding that these aren’t just properties; they are people’s homes,” James observes. “Bringing in a high-end domestic design company raises the bar entirely. We look at how a home sits within the landscape so that it develops, grows, and feels organically tethered to the surrounding countryside.”
This meticulous care is evident in current projects like Temple Guiting. Rather than planting immature shrubbery, Isola curates an instant sense of heritage. “We are dropping mature tree stock into a central island feature,” James shares. “We use native species like Prunus avium (wild cherry) and Malus sylvestris (crab apple) to provide stunning spring blossom and autumn sustenance for local wildlife. The goal is for the landscape to look as though it has been there for centuries, achieving an immediate sense of maturity and architectural balance.”

The New Luxury: Leisure, Wellness, and ‘Zoning’
The modern luxury clientele is no longer looking for just a manicured lawn; they are seeking immersive experiences.
“The garden is a literal extension of the interior,” says James. “We design outdoor spaces like homes, complete with ‘rooms’ and ‘’transition corridors’ rather than traditional paths. You might walk from a limestone paved dining terrace through lush planting borders, transitioning to rich clay pavers by a fireside seating area, effectively moving from one outdoor room to another.”
Current trends favour wellness and extended seasonal living:
- The Rise of Blue Spaces: “In our first ten years, we were filling swimming pools in; over the last decade, we are building them. People crave real, tangible experiences in nature.”
- Thermal Wellness: Dedicated zones for bespoke saunas, swim spas and cold plunge pools.
- Indoor-Outdoor Rooms: Elegant structures featuring log burners and deep seating, allowing clients to sit comfortably amidst nature deep into an autumn afternoon.
- Alfresco Gastronomy: Fully equipped outdoor kitchens and dining rooms that entice families to spend their entire weekends outside.
